Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that love to play, interact and climb. They require 2 to 3 hours a day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games while listening to music, and learning new tricks. They also enjoy going to parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local restaurants and bars. They are not just a wonderful pet, but they are they are also a great companion for children.

They can be extremely loud, despite their adoration for them. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They can make ear-shattering screeches and loud calls that could be disruptive to those living in apartments or condos.

Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means males and females are hard to tell apart. Because of this, the only way to reliably identify sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is known pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Lolita's care

For years activists have been calling for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists believed that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to return to the ocean.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her a relative in a plan to eventually move her to the open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where she could live for the remaining days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals and are close to their family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her to retire from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita has been critiqued for the quality of food that they provide to killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was removed from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. While the species is endangered living in a tank that some consider to be too small.

Lolita blue & gold macaw's Health

Lolita is beautiful, however her health is declining. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and want to see her returned to the wild. Since her captor does not have to disclose the information, it's unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays an important part in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity.

Despite these ongoing health concerns, many are hopeful that Lolita may be closer to living in the wild than before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has stated his commitment to move the whale from her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.

After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea where she can take a deep dive in the ocean, perhaps even reconnect with her orca mother. Sadly the plans came too late for the beloved whale who died on Friday from what was believed to be a kidney issue.
