Item upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can be a good source of damage, more AD or even more affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is usually superior to modernized Common or Magic equipment due to their high demands.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They increase the performance of the item they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of the game and purchased from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Alternately, they can be salvaged from items with upgrade item components within them by using an expert or greater salvage kit.

The amount of damage that an armored Item upgrade or weapon will absorb is contingent on the level of its upgrades. A piece of armor upgraded to its highest upgrade level will increase its damage absorption. It is important to keep in mind that this will increase the weight of the armor, so it should be heavier.

There are a few different types of armor upgrades that are available in the game and they all have different effects. Certain upgrades give armor an additional amount of health points while others make it stronger and lighter. The name of the armor upgrade will tell you the kind of upgrade an item can receive, as shown below.

Some upgrades also feature magical or a combination of technology and magic, which is indicated by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges to use, which is identified by the "Charges" entry in the table below. These charges are either continuously updated or never expire depending on the upgrade.

Iron Ore is the cheapest way to upgrade your armor. You can find it by exploring and looting small chests. Titanium is more costly, but can be found at the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, such as the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied to high-level armor pieces. These upgrades can provide a significant boost to performance and are worth the investment, especially for 1-handed weapons.

The player should be aware, however, that upgrading a piece to its maximum upgrade level will increase its defense value. However, it will also affect its agility and speed. For this reason, it is generally not recommended to upgrade most armor pieces beyond +9, since the added defense is usually not worth the weight and power cost of the improvements required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to increase the effectiveness of specific aspects of an weapon. For instance, an upgrade may improve the damage that is caused by a shotgun's shells or the accuracy of a sniper rifle. Certain weapons come with special enhancements to enhance their intrinsic capabilities. These include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and reduces the risk of overheating of the weapon) and Kinetic Coils (increases the velocity of projectiles for greater damage).

The majority of weapon upgrades require a whetblade, one of three Power Dices and a different amount Minerals and Erons. These can be obtained by finishing side quests, killing a certain amount of monsters or bosses, or by contacting the Weapon upgrade item NPC in Central Flarine.

You could continue to do this until you reached the maximum upgrade level for the equipment or weapon, after which the upgrades would be reset.

You can still do this, but the process is based on RNG and low on agency. Instead, you're better off going to the stores and buying equipment with low upgrade levels but excellent base scores and stat distributions. These items have a higher likelihood of granting you highest level of benefits and blessings.

Most players will want to make the most of upgrades to weapons they are most likely to use to help them level up quicker. Players should also upgrade the weapons that their squadmates utilize to increase their power. Shepard for instance, should upgrade the M92F in order to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will make the weapon more useful when used by biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels are used in the sockets of armor and weapons, increasing the stats of a weapon and providing additional effects. They can be created using the process of jewelry crafting, in which you combine a gem with various reagents at a jewelry table. The higher the grade of the gem, the greater the secondary effect. These reagents can be gotten from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses in the world, or through salvaging Legendary Gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Prisms and gold.

The quality of a diamond can be improved by the Jeweler, in stages that vary from Crude to Royal. The stat boosts can vary depending on the level the jewel is in when it is inserted into jewelry, weapons or gear.

All kinds of jewels are crafted at the Jeweler and Jeweler's Workshop, with the exception of the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a sufficient level to be able to get these. In contrast to other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped out with another jewel of the same kind without destroying it. However you can only swap out the jewels in a piece of equipment once.

Using more jewels in a movement can make it feel more comfortable and is usually performed to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. The jewels also improve performance and make a harder surface than metal so that repeated friction caused by pivots does not cause damage to them.

In addition to the upgrades mentioned above players can also acquire glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. These are a small perk and are able to be swapped easily but aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs are upgradeable, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold, and also a Scattered Crystal. Glyphs are also removed, which returns them to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like aegis and traits, are not swappable, and can only be recovered using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are items of equipment that provide a wide range of tiny but valuable benefits to your hero. They are available in the start-up area as rewards for personal stories or loot. They can also be obtained from vendors as well as through doing road interaction. They can also be crafted by jewelers, and found or purchased at the Trading Post.

The first trinket a player will be able to unlock is the cloak. It gives a small but beneficial boost in movement speed and evasion. After that, they can purchase amulets, rings and necklaces in a similar fashion to how the player obtains armor and weapons. Every piece of equipment has an upgrade slot that can be either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades offer smaller bonuses and can be used in any type of equipment, while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded, and only works with certain types of trinkets.

These trinkets also provide additional buffs and skills that are active even when the character is not fighting. This allows the hero to perform better when they are not active and also helps to compensate for the absence of a strong team or any slots in the talent tree which would normally be filled with the hero's best statistics.

A good rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you won't be replacing in the near future, then any items with desirable stats but less important than the iLevel of the item to be upgraded. This is especially true if you're looking to upgrade several statistics on an item. It is best to upgrade just one crucial stat instead of two subpar ones.

At the beginning of the game, players who are in the jungle will typically want to upgrade their yellow trinket into a red one in the middle and top players usually choose the pink or green ward (depending on the game's matchup). These choices can affect the hero's ability to manage the map.

In addition to the items listed above, players will also discover other trinkets in form trophies and rewards throughout the game. These can be earned through completing certain milestones within the story. For instance, completing the main quest of a chapter or beating an opponent. These achievements can be seen by selecting the appropriate achievement from the reward tab of the hero menu.
