You can upgrade your equipment anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks to ensure that your equipment is up-to-date.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the level of the item but they will always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment. For example, upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points purchasing a similar piece from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to purchase weapon, armor, tool and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased from NPCs of item upgraders for various currencies. They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will show the item's next level of upgrade, in the event that there are enough materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the slot of the item and the current item level and the weapon's price is higher than gloves or bracers, for instance. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to lower the cost of Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item is upgraded to a certain level, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

When a piece of equipment has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer), it will no longer require Flightstones. It's also crucial to choose crests in a wise manner, as they only have one use. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the highest-quality gear you can find, and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next round of upgrades. This is especially applicable to rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character that will be able to benefit from the discount for all accounts when all of the slots are filled with high-quality equipment.
